The trophy was one of the major highlights of the competition, drawing attention due to its impressive size, height, and weight.
Fans and dignitaries were captivated by its grandeur at the grand finale of the 2025 Jagaban Cup, held at the Legacy Pitch in Lagos on Thursday.
In an exclusive chat with Sports247, Gafar, who also serves as the Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association, explained the inspiration behind the trophy’s design.
According to him, the trophy symbolizes the name “Jagaban,” a traditional title associated with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and therefore had to be both prestigious and imposing.
“The trophy alone cost about ₦12 million. It’s not made of metal but ceramic. It’s the Jagaban Cup, so it has to be big and befitting,” Gafar stated.
With its massive size, the trophy is arguably the biggest in Nigeria’s grassroots football scene. Gafar further elaborated on why it was designed to be so grand.
“It’s Jagaban Borgu we’re talking about, so it has to be big. You understand what I’m saying? Anything representing that name must be significant, well-crafted, and symbolically powerful,” he concluded.
Now in its third year, the Jagaban Cup is designed as an empowerment platform for talented young footballers.
Scouts are present throughout the competition to assess emerging talents, providing them with opportunities for international exposure and professional advancement.
