Despite brilliant performers for the English Premier League clubs all through this year, the Nigerian duo of Alex Iwobi of Arsenal and Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi have both missed out on the list of nominees for British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) African player of the year.
While Iwobi and Ndidi had been tipped to be in touching distance of the possibility of taking after former Super Eagles captain, Austin Okocha as the next Nigerian to feel the prestigious prize, both midfielders have missed out all together.
Sports247.ng can report as much, after Iwobi and Ndidi were not named among the five stars named in the shortlist for the 2018 BBC African Footballer of The Year award.
While Iwobi and Ndidi are missing on the roll call, this year’s nominees are Medhi Benatia of Morocco, Kalidou Koulibaly and Sadio Mane of Senegal, as well as Thomas Partey of Ghana and Mohamed Salah of Egypt.
All five are now in the rundown towards who wins the ultimate prize next month, with voting having commenced on Saturday and closes on December 2, after which the result will be made known in a BBC World News a programme on Friday, December 14.
Liverpool forward Salah won last year’s award, with previous winners including Jay-Jay Okocha, Michael Essien, Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure and Riyad Mahrez.
