The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) has announced the official seeding list for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, placing Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna and Egypt’s Omar Assar in the top 16 of the Men’s Singles event.
Aruna, ranked 19th in the world, is seeded 14th, while Assar, ranked 22nd, holds the 16th seed. Both players will start their campaigns in the second round.
Other African players, including Nigeria’s Olajide Omotayo, Egypt’s Mohammed El-Beiali, Algeria’s Mehdi Bouloussa, Senegal’s Ibrahima Diaw, and Congo Brazzaville’s Saheed Idowu, will discover their first-round opponents on July 24 when the draws take place.
In the Women’s Singles, Egypt’s Dina Meshref narrowly missed the top 16, seeding 17th. Meshref and her compatriot Hana Goda, seeded 20th, will begin from the second round. Nigeria’s Offiong Edem and Fatimo Bello, along with Cameroon’s Sarah Hanffou and Algeria’s Lynda Loghraibi, will also start their campaigns in the second round.
Table tennis celebrates its 10th appearance at the Olympic Games with highly-anticipated matches. China’s Wang Chuqin, the world number one, leads the Men’s Singles seeding, followed by compatriot and Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Fan Zhendong.
French favourite Felix Lebrun, seeded third, is a strong contender for a podium finish after impressive performances in recent championships. Brazil’s Hugo Calderano and Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yun-Ju round out the top five seeds.
In the Women’s Singles, China’s Sun Yingsha, with recent World Championships and World Cup victories, is the top seed. Reigning Tokyo 2020 champion Chen Meng is seeded second, setting up a potential rematch of the 2020 Gold medal match.
Japan’s Hina Hayata, Korea’s Shin Yubin, and Romania’s Bernadette Szocs are also strong contenders.
China remains dominant in the Team Events and Mixed Doubles. In the Mixed Doubles, top seeds Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha will face competition from Japan’s Hina Hayata and Tomokazu Harimoto, and Korea’s Lim Jonghoon and Shin Yubin.
The stage is set for thrilling table tennis action at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with fierce battles anticipated across all categories.
