The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) trended across social media platforms on Sunday evening following reports that players and officials of Ikorodu City FC were held hostage in Ibadan after their match against Shooting Stars SC.
The highly anticipated Southwest derby between Shooting Stars and league newcomers Ikorodu City FC ended in a goalless draw, with Ikorodu City retaining bragging rights after winning the first-leg clash in Lagos earlier this season.
However, the post-match scenes took a dark turn.
According to multiple reports on social media, fans of Shooting Stars (3SC) stormed the players’ tunnel and allegedly held Ikorodu City players and staff hostage in their dressing room for over 80 minutes. The team was later rescued by military personnel.
Eyewitness videos and photos surfaced online showing injured fans with bleeding head wounds, with some reports alleging that referees and Ikorodu City supporters were also attacked during the chaos.
One of Ikorodu City’s directors, Suleiman Adebayo, confirmed the ordeal, saying, “Thank God for safety. It was hell.”
The NPFL’s silence has drawn criticism from fans and stakeholders who are calling for immediate disciplinary action and a review of stadium security protocols.
The result was a setback for Shooting Stars’ continental hopes, while Ikorodu City stays in contention with 46 points from 31 matches.
