A brace from Ishaq Kayode Rafiu helped Rivers United solidify its position on top of the Nigeria Professional Football League with a 2-1 victory over Dakkada FC at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Wednesday.
Ishaq Kayode opened scoring for the “Pride of Rivers” in the 33rd minute when he raced through to slot home a pass from Chijioke Akuneto.
Emmanuel Ayaosi against the run of play drew level for the visitors when his spectacular shot from outside the box found the back of the net.
Ishaq Kayode added his 2nd and 9th goal of the season in the 61st minute when he converted from the penalty spot after a Dakkada FC defender was punished for ball handling.
It was a hard earned victory for the NEW Boys and Technical Manager Stanley Eguma did not mince his words in the post match conference.
“It was a good game, 3 points in the bag. I also commend our opponent. They also played good football. The tried to create an upset today but our players lived up to expectation. Actually it was a difficult game, a little of fatigue on my team and it affected our goal rush early in the game. So I commend their effort.”
The victory moved Rivers United 2 points ahead of Remo Stars in second — and a further 4 points of Plateau United in third position on the NPFL log.
Rivers United will be guest Plateau United in Jos on Sunday, 7th February, 2022.
