The purpose of performance management is not only to improve performance but also to improve relationships between people. After all, with increased familiarity, trust, and confidence in leadership, employees are able to thrive and achieve higher levels of success. At its heart, performance management is all about people, which includes our mindsets and relationships with one another.
With this in mind, Ms. Irene Joseph Magebo, the Principal of the Moshi based Kilimanjaro Information Technology College (KITC) have distinguished the differences between a traditional boss and a real leader.
She has proven that while a boss might possess a lot of technical know-how, they won’t necessarily have the ability to inspire and motivate. For a leader to be truly effective, Irene has stirred growth and development, care for KITC’s employee engagement and cultivate great relationships. At the KITC, this is something we all remember Irene for!
While Artificial Intelligence (AI) is influencing nearly every field today, from teaching enablement Irene has cultivated a cross-cultural engagement with employees to inspire and encourage them to deliver on time.
This management approach is also having a huge impact on the programs that KITC covers such as Gender-based Violence (GBV), Tonya Muro Global Network for Leadership, Access, Workforce Development and Empowering, Incubation Program and have gently influenced the performance of its management.
Irene understands the importance to create a culture where you can openly discuss and manage mental well-being. She has simply created a channel of open communication KITC employees and emphasizes that mental health matters and encourages them that being open.
She occasionally organizes regular meetings to let them know that she is there to listen and support them. This approach has helped to make KITC employees aware that their workplace is a welcoming and supportive space for everyone. Sharing her own stories has helped empower KITC employees to share theirs too.
She also conducts one-to-one catch-ups and meetings to openly talk about personal issues that have comforted the employees. Irene uses this time to ask how employees are feeling and if there’s anything they’d like to talk about. If there is something on their mind, she encourages them to seek support or share any helpful initiatives they have.
KITC is proud to celebrate Irene’s tenure as the Principal, in pomp and splendor.
