Former Chairman of Gombe Football Association, Gara Gombe has lamented the poor structure and standards of our league, stating that the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for now will do more harm than good in our League Matchdays.
Gara Gombe said this in an interview with Sports247, as he criticized the poor structure and standards of our League as well as the ignorance of footballing rules, admitting that VAR should not be introduced for now in our football.
He said “Till today, we have never asked ourselves, what is the minimum number of security we need in each match, another thing is ignorance, when people don’t even understand the rule of football, it’s so bad. That’s why I have been saying please, for now, don’t bring VAR to Nigeria, if you bring VAR to Nigeria, you are just inviting Riot, because it will be an avenue where insecurity will be so much in our match venues”.
The Former NFF technical committee also admitted that since the betting companies came into Nigerian football, the amount of insecurities in match venues has increased.
“Since the betting companies came to Nigerian football, insecurities at match Venues increased. Hooligans do what they want. I have never seen one hooligan that is sent to jail or prison for attacking a referee, or destroying bus of visiting team or causing injury or harm to a player or referee on the field of play. I need to be educated if there is anyone who is been arraigned in a court for committing crimes in the field of play or match venues, there is none”, he said.
Gara Gombe started that we need to do a lot of work, if we are to reduce the rate of insecurities in our match days, adding as well that showing our matches live on television, will go a long way in the fight against insecurity.
He also stated that severe punishment should be imposed and enforced on teams or individuals cause commotions and troubles in Match venues.
