Ilechukwu, Ogunmodede Join Eguavoen’s Team For Crucial AFCON Qualifiers Against Benin And Rwanda

With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign in full swing, interim Super Eagles manager Augustine Eguavoen has reinforced his coaching team, appointing five key figures to strategize Nigeria’s path to victory in the upcoming matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

Eguavoen’s selections include Enugu Rangers’ head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu and Remo Stars’ Daniel Ogunmodede. Both coaches are coming off impressive seasons in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL). Ilechukwu led the Flying Antelopes to a league title, while Ogunmodede guided Remo Stars to a strong second-place finish. Their tactical acumen and understanding of the local football scene are expected to be crucial as the Super Eagles prepare for these vital encounters.

Adding international expertise to the mix, Tomaz Zorec, a Slovenian fitness coach, has also been drafted into the technical team. Zorec’s experience in conditioning players for peak performance will be pivotal, especially given the physical demands of back-to-back matches. Joining them is Olatunji Baruwa, a seasoned goalkeeper trainer, and Eboboritse Uwejamomere, a match analyst whose insights will aid in decoding the strategies of their opponents.

Eguavoen, a former Nigeria international and experienced coach, expressed confidence in his assembled team. “These are coaches and professionals who have proven their worth in different capacities. Their inclusion brings a blend of tactical knowledge, physical conditioning, and analytical depth that will help us secure the results we need,” he stated.

The Super Eagles will convene in Uyo on Monday to begin preparations for their first match against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic, scheduled for Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, with kickoff at 5 PM local time. The team will then travel to Kigali, where they will face the Amavubi (Bees) of Rwanda on Tuesday at Amahoro Stadium, with the match set to start at 3 PM Rwanda time (2 PM Nigeria time).

The stakes are high as Nigeria aims to maintain its strong AFCON tradition, and this carefully selected coaching team will play a vital role in guiding the Super Eagles to success.
