Former African Footballer of the Year believes making the semifinals of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be an achievement for the Super Eagles.
Despite the team’s strong qualifying campaign and relatively easy draw in Egypt, Ikpeba who was part of the Tunisia ’94 squad that won Nigeria’s second AFCON title, believes the Super Eagles are not favorite for the trophy pointing instead to hosts Egypt and Morocco.
“We are not favorites in this tournament, countries like Egypt and Morocco have better chances of winning but I think we have what it takes to make last four and if we get that, I consider it an achievement,” Ikpeba told busybuddies.
Nigeria are in Group B alongside Guinea, Burundi and Madagascar on their return to the tournament after missing the last two editions.
“Guinea might be a stubborn side to beat because they are very physical and we have always found it difficult to beat them in the past but there’s team unity and I think if we carry on with the same form, we will top that group,” he added.
The former Monaco and Borussia Dortmund attacker however emphasised that the team should be supported by Nigerians and the Federation.
“The key thing is that we Nigerians should come out and support our players and the Federation should do a good job to give the players the needed support before Nations Cup starts.”
