Kano Pillars midfielder, Ikenna Paul Hilary says there’s no shame if Nigerian players based abroad come back home to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) to find their footing in the game.
Hilary himself, returned to the NPFL from Europe after a messy work permit brouhaha with his last European team.
Speaking with Sports247.ng, Ikenna, who also won bronze with Nigeria at the CHAN tournament in 2014, said returning home isn’t low for any player who started from that stage.
“Playing abroad is a good thing in the career of any ambitious player. But when the conditions aren’t right to excel, the best possible means should be retracing one’s steps and returning to where it all started,” the former Slovenian based star enthused to Sports247.ng.
“I had work permit issues and offers that was on my table wasn’t too good for a player of my calibre. I had to explore my options. The best decision for me was to make a return to the NPFL.”
“My appeal to players is not to see the local league as a backward step in their careers.”
The Pillars star is one of several names that have made a U-turn in their careers, the latest being former Hearts left-back Juwon Oshaniwa who could feature for Akwa United next season.
