The first Edition of Ika Grassroots Football League is set to commence in July 2021.
The league will be organized by KG Sports Foundation and will bring together grassroots teams within Ika. CEO of KG Sports Foundation and Director of KG Sports Academy Winners of the just concluded KG Sports Foundation Cup, Dr. Ken Gadaffi told sports247.ng after the Finals on Saturday that the league is to keep the football-loving players in Agbor more active and to provide an opportunity for scouts to identify promising young players.
“We want to move away from just waiting till the end of the year when politicians or social clubs will organize a tournament for Christmas celebrations, the just concluded Foundation Cup was with only 6 teams but we want to open the doors for more teams to play so we looking at about 8-10 teams in the inaugural edition,” the erudite sports Administrator said.
The League will be played in a home and away format and the top 3 teams will be awarded Prizes while the bottom 2 teams will be relegated.
“We want to make it more challenging so all 6 teams from the foundation Cup will qualify automatically while a playoff will be organized for other teams to complete the number to 8 or 10” Dr. Gadaffi explained.
A meeting of the pioneers for the upcoming league was held on The eve of the Foundation cup with all 6 teams endorsing the start of the Ika Grassroot Football League.
