Ighalo Joins Legends’ Line-up To Honour Ambode

Changchun Yatai of China striker, Odion Jude Ighalo has been added to the list of legends signing up to play an exhibition match in honour of outgoing Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.

 

 

Sports247.ng gathered that Ighalo is joined by Cote d’Ivoire star, Didier Zokora as the latest duo to confirm their availability for “The Match: A Celebration of Excellence in Sports.”

Event coordinator, ex-international, Waheed Akanni said the match is meant to recognize and celebrate Ambode’s strides in Lagos, as past and present African stars will play against Nigerians at Onikan Stadium, Lagos on March 16, 2019.

Akanni said Ighalo is excited with the prospect of joining some big names on the continent in celebrating Ambode for his efforts in sports development.

Also listed is former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Zokora, who’s The Elephants’ of Cote d’Ivoire’s most capped player.

Fellow-Ivoriens, Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba and ex-Arsenal defender Kolo Toure, as well as Ghanaian duo Michael Essien and Stephen Appiah, French World Cup winner, Christian Karembu, and Senegal’s El-Hajj Diouf have already signified their intention to participate.

Ex-Super Eagles stars Samson Siasia, Nwankwo Kanu, Austin Okocha, Joseph Yobo, Julius Efosa Aghahowa and others will file out for the Nigerian Legends versus the African All-Stars, who will also feature Liberia’s president, George Weah.

Akanni added: “We have seen the infrastructural developments in Lagos under Ambode. The Onikan Stadium that has been abandoned over the years is under reconstruction to meet FIFA standards.

“Teslim Balogun Stadium is undergoing similar reconstruction while the Agege and Epe stadiums are in fantastic shape not to talk of the Maracana sports complex in Ajegunle.”
