Ibom Angels continued their impressive unbeaten run in the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Championship 2024, securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Delta Babes on Matchday 2 in Calabar.
The win bolsters their bid for one of the two coveted promotion spots.
The match saw Ibom Angels take control just before halftime. Ugobest Osuji opened the scoring in the 44th minute, finishing off a swift counter-attack that caught Delta Babes off guard.
Abasiofon Uwah added a crucial second goal deep into first-half stoppage time, capitalizing on a defensive mistake to give her team a 2-0 lead at the break.
Delta Babes came out stronger in the second half, determined to get back into the game. Their efforts were rewarded in the 62nd minute when Ifeoma Damian found the back of the net with a well-placed shot.
However, despite sustained pressure, Delta Babes couldn’t break through the resilient Ibom defense again, and the Angels held on to their lead.
Reflecting on the match, Abasiofon Uwah said, “Extending our unbeaten run is a great feeling. We knew Delta Babes would come out strong, but we stayed disciplined and executed our plan. That goal before halftime was vital, and it shows how focused we are on our promotion goal.”
Ibom Angels’ victory builds on their commanding 3-0 win over Papa Soccer in Matchday 1, keeping them at the top of Group B1. With their unbeaten streak intact, they are well-positioned in the race for promotion.
Delta Babes, now with back-to-back losses after falling to Unification FC in their first match, face an uphill battle to stay in contention for promotion.
