It’s five games left till the end of the Nigeria Professional Football League 2022 season and the race for the Golden Boot award is still intense and very hot between the trio of Chijoke Akuneto of River’s United, Enyimba’s Victor Mbaoma, and Gombe United’s Yusuf Abdulafeez.
Akuneto currently leads with 16 goals, while Victor and Yusuf are closely behind with 15 but the Rivers United forward told the press that it won’t get to his head and lead to selfish play Sports247 reports.
“I’m not bothered about that at all, it will even help to ginger me and make me concentrate on doing more better, I’d like to win the award as top scorer,” Akuneto said.
“The golden boot target won’t make me to be too selfish, I will support my team mate in better scoring position than chasing personal glory, I’ve been providing assists for my teammates and I will still do more, he added.
According to NPFL statistician, Areo Samuel, Akuneto who signed from Heartland before the start of this season, has had 21 goal involvement for Rivers United as at Matchday 33 ending, no other player in the top-flight of the country has more.
“Its been an eventful season for me and Rivers United. I’m excited about how the season is going, we’ve been playing good football and improving by each game,” Akuneto said.
“The aim is to end the season as champions and we believe its achievable with more hard work. I will like to win both the title and goal scorer award, but lifting the NPFL title with Rivers United is my ultimate target,” he concluded.
