Genk’s new manager Wouter Vrancken wants Cyriel Dessers to stay at the club beyond this summer, despite the striker being heavily linked with a move away.
Dessers initially joined Genk in 2020, but he struggled for playing time in his first year at the club. Last season, he was loaned out to Dutch club Feyenoord Rotterdam where he shone.
The Nigerian international played a prominent role in Feyenoord’s run to the final of the UEFA Europa Conference League where they eventually lost 1-0 to Roma.
Dessers led the Conference League in scoring with 10 goals and was named to the team of the season. He scored 21 goals in all competitions.
Feyenoord chose not to make the loan transfer permanent. Dessers has now resumed preseason with his parent club, but his future remains uncertain, with speculations suggesting Genk may sell.
However, Genk’s new manager Vrancken is hopeful that the 27-year-old stays put at the Luminus Arena beyond this summer.
“He [Dessers] came in here the right way. Cyriel is Cyriel. He confirms the positive stories I have heard about him,” Vrancken said as quoted by HLN.
“In terms of mentality, you will have no problems with him. Obviously, I hope he stays. I haven’t specifically talked to him about the future yet, but the intention is to do so today or tomorrow.”
