Since the olympics, Odunayo made an appearance for the first time in a major competition.
Odunayo gave away a massive lead as Nigerian fans never saw it coming. it was what was described as victory in the bag not until her opponent played a fast one on her.
Speaking after her title defence in Birmingham, Odunayo said that she thought she was done with wrestling.” I thought I was done with wrestling after the olympics so coming here to defend my title is so amazing to me. After the disappointment of the olympics, I had a lot of people that stood by me, my fans, even people I don’t know on my social media, just to keep me going. And my coach was there for me. They kept encouraging me, telling me that all will be well.”
During her medal winning fight, the footage was reviewed to possibly give points to her opponent but the “never say die attitude” Odunayo kept on being strong throughout ” I knew I was leading because I scored 222 and she had 211 so if they had awarded the points to her, I will still win the bout”
Talking about the way forward for her, Odunayo has put her mind on the coming muslim games in Istanbul, Turkey and the Olympics hasn’t crossed her mind yet. ” I will be going to the muslim games in Istanbul and from there, I don’t know what’s next. I think my president will decide” she concluded.
