“From September 1, foreign citizens will not be allowed to enter the territory of Hungary,” said Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s chief of staff Gergely Gulyas.

“The epidemiological classification of the countries has been abolished. Hungary is green, all other countries have turned red,” Gulyas told reporters, adding “most of the origins of the new infections are foreign”.

Hungarian citizens returning from abroad will be allowed to enter as long as they resent two negative coronavirus tests or quarantine themselves for 14 days.

The government would later specify other exceptions, such as for diplomats. The border closure will be maintained for a month.

Exceptions for the ban on entry for foreigners would apply to military convoys and for humanitarian transit, as well as business or diplomatic travel.

The government was considering various rules on how fans could be allowed to attend the UEFA Super Cup match between Bayern Munich and Sevilla in Budapest on September 24.

As you probably know, The UEFA Executive Committee earlier decided to allow the 2020 UEFA Super Cup to be played on 24 September 2020 in Budapest with a reduced number of spectators – up to 30 % of the capacity of the stadium – in order to study precisely the impact of spectators on the UEFA Return to Play Protocol.
