A 26th minute goal by Chinyere Kalu was enough to help Dznjuma’s size snatch maximum points from the game and, while many observers accused his team of playing defensive tactics, the witty tactician admitted it was intentional.
“It was a tactical approach,” said the vastly exposed gaffer, who is also the handler of Nigeria’s under-20 women’s national team, Falconets.
“We started with 3-5-2. Five defenders on the field, with an inverted number six and leaving our striker to run upfront.
“We conserved energy for the second half. Knowing the home team wanted to win.
“You don’t come here and throw everything upfront. All you need to do is sit there and soak pressure as much as you can.”
While refraining from taking a swipe at the match referee for some questionable calls fans complained about during the match, Danjuma praised his girls for rising to the occasion.
He also hailed the Amazons for playing fully to his instructions and maintaining their lead until the ref’s last whistle.
“In the whole of my career, I don’t talk about match officials because you are bound to meet them any day, anytime. It was my tactical approach.
“It was a very tough game and a very tough nut to crack. It’s the second stanza of the league, and every club is trying to gain a good position to be part of the Super-6. That’s why it was a very, very tough game.”
Danjuma concluded by projecting into his aspirations for the club and expectations from their remaining games for the season.
“We are a team still rebuilding. We have 21 players that left this season. So, these are a bunch of new players playing for us. We gave ourselves two years to fully stabilise.
“First, let’s calmly qualify for the Super-6; then see how we can get a team that is blending and ready to play.
“We are a team that is building and ready to make progress,” Danjuma submitted.
