Heartland FC is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Coach Christian Power Obi, who tragically lost his life on Friday, August 23, 2024, due to a road accident while en route to Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, to participate in the TICO/SELECT Ifeanyi Ekwueme Preseason Tournament.
The unfortunate incident occurred shortly after the Heartland FC team departed Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, at around 3:30 pm in three vehicles.
Approximately 30 minutes into the journey, one of the vehicles collided with a carelessly parked truck in an attempt to avoid an oncoming vehicle.
The impact caused severe shock to Coach Obi, who was left unconscious with a slight injury to his right leg.
Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital in Okwelle, Imo State, Coach Obi sadly succumbed to his injuries.
His passing has left the club and its community in deep mourning, as Coach Obi was a highly respected figure at Heartland FC, known for his instrumental role in the club’s unbeaten run during the 2022-23 Nigeria National League season.
The club has requested privacy for both Coach Obi’s family and the team during this difficult time.
Further statements will not be made for the time being. Coach Obi’s remains have been deposited at the Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH) morgue in Owerri, while the injured have been referred to the same hospital for further care.
Fans and supporters of Heartland FC are still in shock and saddened over this unfortunate incident.
