A resurgence in handball fortunes is coming the way of Borno State, as sports247.ng gathered that once vibrant Topline Sparrows of Maiduguri are set to receive a massive boost.
The report out of the North East reveals that a board member of Borno State Handball Association, Hussaini Mohammed has set plans in motion to revive the female handball outfit.
As he embarks on the revival mission, Mohammed has detailed a team to select female players from internally displaced persons camps in the zone, then train them and possibly sponsor their education.
The ex-Borno Spiders and Niger United player, who played professional handball for Al Ittihad of Saudi Arabia and Al Ahli Sports club of Oman, said an intra-state competition will also hold in the first quarter of 2019.
Mohammed said: “I am happy to announce that the female handball team of Borno State will feature at this year’s National Sports Festival.
“The last time Topline Sparrows of Maiduguri participated in a national competition was in 2015, making its last international appearance at the continental level in 2012.
“I’ve been working with a private body for sponsorship of a secondary school male and female handball competition.
“I will personally donate the trophies for the event. We are planning to pick players from the IDP camps and train them.”
