The three-time Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) champion, who recently battled back from injuries sustained during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, finds herself sidelined once again, a setback that deeply affects both her and the Nigerian national team.
The injury, confirmed by her club FC Rosengård, occurred just as Ayinde was preparing to join the Super Falcons’ camp for their Olympic campaign. This unfortunate development deprives Nigeria of one of its most experienced and dynamic midfielders as they head into the prestigious tournament.
In an emotional message shared via social media, Ayinde expressed her sorrow and gratitude: “With a heavy heart, I announce I won’t be part of the Super Falcons for the Olympics. I’m deeply grateful to FC Rosengård and my teammates for their support and love. Best of luck to my fellow Super Falcons. I’ll be cheering for you and will return stronger. Go Super Falcons.”
Born in Kaduna, Ayinde’s journey in football has been marked by resilience and excellence. Her absence is a significant blow to the Super Falcons, who will miss her midfield prowess and leadership on the pitch. Ayinde has been a pivotal player for the national team, contributing significantly to their successes over the years.
Super Falcons’ head coach Randy Waldrum now faces the challenge of replacing Ayinde in the squad. Among the players in consideration are Jumoke Alani from Nasarawa Amazons, Ifeoma Onumonu of Utah Royals (USA), Gift Monday from Costa Adeje Tenerife Egatesa (Spain), and Morufa Ademola from Rivers Angels.
As the team prepares for the Olympics, they will undoubtedly feel the absence of Ayinde’s experience and skill. Nevertheless, they are determined to honor her by putting forth a strong performance in Paris. The Super Falcons will rally and adapt, embodying the spirit of their sidelined teammate as they aim for glory on the Olympic stage.
This setback serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of sports and the importance of depth and resilience in a team. Ayinde’s focus will now shift to recovery, with hopes of returning stronger and continuing her distinguished career with both Rosengård and the Super Falcons.
