Speaking on Commonwealth Day at the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) Sports Ground in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, Gumel emphasized the urgent need for collective action by parents, teachers, and the government to combat the menace.
“This is one fight that all—parents, teachers, and the government—should join hands in tackling,” he said. “Unless addressed head-on, our communities should be ready to face the dire consequences.”
Represented by the NOC Secretary-General, Babatunde Popoola, Gumel underscored the event’s goal of promoting unity, equity, and youth empowerment, in line with Commonwealth values.
The program provided a platform for students from four secondary schools in the area to engage in meaningful social interactions and discussions.
A key session was led by medical officer Dr. Olubukola Bojuwoye, who educated students on the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of responsible drug use.
“Using drugs can make or mar you, but the ultimate choice is yours,” Dr. Bojuwoye cautioned.
The one-day event was coordinated by NOC Assistant Secretary for Commonwealth Games Affairs, Austin Odigie, reinforcing the commitment to youth education and development in sports and beyond.
