Nigeria’s sole representative in the swimming event of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games is 17 years old Habibat Ogunbanwo, a student of the famous FINA Development Centre in Kazan, Russia.
She won Heat 1 of the Women’s 100m Freestyle with a fascinating new personal best time of 59.74 seconds which doubles as the national record, beating Ngozi Monu’s time of 1.00.50. Unfortunately, her timing was not good enough to qualify her for the next round.
She returned to Nigeria to swimming for the first time in 29 years since Joshua Ikhagomi appeared in Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games.
Ogunbanwo had featured for Nigeria in the Hangzhou 2018 FINA World Swimming Championships and also participated in the Gwangju 2018 World Swimming Championships.
