Guinea-Bissau regained their position at the top of Group A in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after securing a victory against Sao Tome and Principe in their fifth match.
The tightly contested game ended with a 1-0 away win for Guinea-Bissau, thanks to a goal
scored by Zinho Gano, who plays for a Belgian club.
The match began with a goalless first half, but Gano managed to break the deadlock just ten
minutes into the second half.
This crucial win ensured that Guinea-Bissau completed a comprehensive double over Sao Tome and Principe, who currently occupy the bottom spot in the group standings.
Under the guidance of head coach Baciro Cande, Guinea-Bissau now sits at the top of
Group A with 10 points from five matches, surpassing Nigeria by a single point.
This victory puts the Djurtus in a favorable position to secure their fourth appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations.
However, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have an opportunity to reclaim the lead in the group if
they defeat Sierra Leone in their upcoming match, scheduled to take place in Liberia on
Sunday.
Currently, Nigeria holds the second spot in Group A with nine points from four games, while Sierra Leone follows closely in third place with five points from four matches.
If Sierra Leone fails to beat Nigeria in their upcoming encounter, both the Super Eagles and Guinea-Bissau will secure their qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast even before playing their final group-stage matches.
The battle for the top spot in Group A remains intense, with Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria vying
for qualification. Football enthusiasts eagerly await the outcome of the upcoming matches,
which will determine the final standings and the teams that will progress to the prestigious
tournament in Ivory Coast.
