Bendel Insurance head coach, Greg Ikhenoba, has praised his team’s resilience and tactical discipline after their 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City in a thrilling Nigeria Premier Football League matchday 26 encounter.
Speaking after the game, Ikhenoba acknowledged the tough challenge posed by Ikorodu City, especially given their previous 3-0 defeat to the Lagos-based side.
“We expected a tough game because they were the first team to beat us 3-0. We already knew them and prepared well for them.
We missed many chances in the game, but we are grateful for the result. We will continue to correct our mistakes as we prepare for the next match,” Ikhenoba stated.
The game saw a barren first half, despite numerous chances from the Benin Arsenals, including Meyinwa Oritseweyinmi’s 10th-minute flying header that went agonizingly close.
However, the breakthrough came in the 51st minute when Stanley Okorom unleashed a powerful long-range strike that Ikorodu’s goalkeeper, Faith James, could not keep out.
The joy was short-lived as Shola Adelani equalized just two minutes later with a well-taken free kick, putting pressure back on Insurance.
Determined to reclaim the lead, Insurance intensified their attacking play, with Osahon Osobo controlling the midfield masterfully.
His brilliant assist in the 69th minute set up Uche Collins, who made no mistake in restoring Insurance’s advantage and securing the 2-1 victory.
The win propelled Insurance to 38 points, placing them 8th on the league table as they gear up for another crucial clash against Bayelsa United on Sunday.
With confidence growing, Ikhenoba and his team will now look to build on this performance and continue their push for a strong finish in the league.
