Greg Etafia Advocates For Nigerian Coach To Lead Super Eagles

Former Nigerian international, Greg Etafia, has voiced his opinion on the ongoing discussion about the next coach of the Super Eagles, suggesting that it would be beneficial to have a Nigerian coach take over the position.

Etafia, a former Moroka Swallows goalkeeper, believes that appointing a Nigerian coach could not only save the federation the financial cost of hiring a foreign coach but also provide an opportunity for local talent to shine on the international stage.

In his remarks, Etafia emphasized the importance of doing what is right for Nigerian football to progress, suggesting that promoting local coaches to higher positions could be a significant step forward.

He expressed confidence in the abilities of many Nigerian coaches to handle the Super Eagles effectively, provided they are given the necessary support and autonomy by the Football Association (FA) to carry out their duties.

“We have to do the right things if we want to really go forward and take our football forward in terms of the national team and encourage most of the local coaches to go to the highest part in terms of their badges,” Etafia remarked.

Despite acknowledging the debate surrounding the appointment of a foreign or local coach, Etafia maintained his stance in favour of a Nigerian coach leading the Super Eagles.

He emphasized the need for the FA to entrust local coaches with the responsibility and provide them with the freedom to implement their strategies and lead the team effectively.

“I think we have a lot of good local coaches that can handle the Super Eagles, but the question is will the FA give them the free hands to do their job,” Etafia stated.

“So it’s a debate, but I just feel like it’s time for a local coach to have that mantle to take care of the Super Eagles.”

Etafia called for unity and support from all Nigerians, regardless of whether the next coach is Nigerian or foreign.

He emphasized the importance of rallying behind the chosen coach to ensure the success of the Super Eagles on the international stage.

“I still stand with the local coaches, but you never know whoever comes in as a foreign coach or a local coach, we as Nigerians just need to support,” Etafia concluded.
