GP World FA Nnewi on saturday emerged champions of the maiden edition of ‘My Anambra Football’ Super 8 tournament sponsored by Aspire FC of Adani-Ani with technical support and organization by the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA).
The Nnewi based side emerged champions after defeating Konti FC Umunnachi 4-2 on penalties as the clash ended 1-1 at regulation time in a match played at the Neros Sports Stadium Nanka. With the win GP World FA has secured the Nigerian Nationwide League two slot to play in the fourth tier of Nigerian club football to cap off a fine performance at the tournament as they also smiled home with the top prize of N500,000. Konti FC Umunnachi and Mekon United FC Umunze who finished in second and third places also received N300,000 and N200,000 respectively for their exploits.
Speaking to Sports writers, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Prince Oliver Ndigwe said the competition provided a platform to showcase the unearthed talents in the state, he stated that the competition has rekindled the nostalgia for grassroot football development as well as nurture and project the young ones to limelight. He commended the team spirit displayed by the 27 teams during the course of the competition and promised that the next edition will be much better.
In his reaction, The initiator of ‘My Anambra Football’ project and former Caretaker Committee Chairman of the ANSFA, Dr. Emeka Okeke, stated that the Super 8 Tournament was part of ‘My Anambra Football’ Next 10-year plan to reawaken and revitalize football in the state. He commended the participating teams and the LOC for a job well done before and during the duration of the tournament.
Individual awards and prizes were given at the end of the competition as Coach Chibuike Umeh of GP World FA emerged as the Best Coach of the Competition, Most Disciplined Team of the Tournament went to Ifechikwulu FC Omor, Arinze Iloka of Konti FC was voted the Outstanding player of the tournament, Best Goalkeeper award went to Ifeanyi Ifiokwe of Konti FC, Best Midfielder and Most Tactical player went to Ejike Anaduaka of Pope John Paul FC while Adina Odinaka who scored a total of 3 goals won the Golden Boot award.
