The announcement was made through a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Oguwike Nwachuku, in Owerri.

Earlier, Governor Uzodimma had pledged N5 million to each of the players during their courtesy visit to the Government House in Owerri. The players who received the monetary reward are Desire Okparanozie, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Vivian Ikechukwu, Tochukwu Oluehi, Ohale Osinachi, and Michelle Alozie, a U.S.-born Nigerian.

Governor Uzodimma expressed his admiration for the exceptional football skills displayed by the female players during the tournament in Morocco. He acknowledged their remarkable achievement, stating that they not only made Nigeria proud but also brought honor to their home state, Imo.

Furthermore, Governor Uzodimma extended his congratulations to the Super Falcons for qualifying for the upcoming Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, scheduled to take place from July 20 to August 20.

Recalling the intense AWCON match between the Super Falcons and the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco, the encounter ended with a penalty shootout after a goalless draw in regular time. Unfortunately, the Nigerian team lost 5-4 on penalties, preventing them from securing a record tenth championship title.

The match witnessed a high level of competitiveness, with both teams displaying a strong desire to score. In the second half, Nigeria’s Halimat Ayinde received a red card, reducing the Nigerian team’s numerical advantage. Nevertheless, Uchenna Kanu managed to break the deadlock in the 62nd minute, giving Nigeria the lead. However, a defensive mistake allowed Morocco to equalize just four minutes later.

Despite facing setbacks such as red cards for two players, Rasheedat Ajibade and Halimat Ayinde, the Super Falcons continued to show determination and resilience throughout the match. The game went into extra time after six additional minutes were added to regulation time.

Governor Uzodimma’s gesture of rewarding the players demonstrates his appreciation for their efforts and contribution to Nigerian football. By fulfilling his pledge, he not only recognizes their accomplishments but also motivates other athletes to strive for excellence.

The support and recognition given by the governor to the Super Falcons highlight the importance of nurturing and celebrating talent in Nigerian sports. As the team prepares for the Women’s World Cup, they will undoubtedly be inspired by the backing of their home state and the nation, as they aim to make their mark on the global stage.
