Debutants Gombe United got their Ogunjobi Gold Cup campaign off in a flying start after they put two goals past FC Ebedei in the opening game of the nation’s prestigious pre-season tourney which kicked off in Ilorin, Kwara State on Thursday.
It took the Savannah Scorpions nine minutes to register their first-ever goal in the tourney from open play.
Mohammed Husain got rewarded for his brilliant work as he beat a schoolboy FC Ebedei defence and rounded off goalkeeper Ugbor Mark to put the ball into the net.
Gombe United then defended well as they held on to their first-half lead.
The Oliseh Boys were impressive in the start of the second half as they kept the pressure in search for an equalizing goal.
Victor Gabriel should have leveled scores for FC Ebedei in the 67th minute after his effort of the ball rattled the woodwork with a fierce strike from a set-piece.
Five minutes later, Mark produced one of the best performances of the game after he made a world-class save to deny Gombe Utd a second goal.
Mark had his sharp reflexes to thank as he parried Sulaimon’s ferocious shot to the corner to earn a standing ovation from both teams.
It was a little too late for the Oliseh Boys as in the 92nd minute, Yusuf Azeez put the icing on the cake after beating his marker to slice the ball into the net.
