Gombe Finalizes Preparations For 2024 Inter-Secondary Schools Athletics Championship

Preparations for the 2024 Gombe State Inter-Secondary Schools Athletics Championship are advancing steadily, as confirmed by the latest reports from the event’s organizing committees.

The reports were discussed and unanimously accepted during the fifth sitting of the Main Organizing Committee (MOC) held on 10th August 2024 at the GOFCECON Hotel in Gombe.

The meeting, convened by the Chairman of the MOC, Hon. Ahmed Shuaibu Gara-Gombe, was marked by expressions of satisfaction regarding the progress made by three crucial sub-committees: Transport and Accommodation, Media, and Technical Committees.

“The level of commitment and progress we have seen from these committees is commendable,” Hon. Gara-Gombe stated.

The Transport and Accommodation Sub-Committee’s report, presented by Secretary Mr. Tanko Adamu, highlighted significant advancements in the inspection of proposed Games Villages, securing approval from the Gombe State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Ministry of Education.

However, Mr. Adamu emphasized the urgent need for improvements in sanitation facilities, calling for the Gombe State Environmental Protection Agency (GOSEPA) to undertake immediate fumigation of the Games Village.

The Media Sub-Committee, led by Secretary Yakubu Maikudi, outlined a comprehensive communication strategy, including a radio jingle campaign that received the MOC’s approval.

This committee also proposed a new dissemination model to track developments, which was approved, albeit with an increased budget allocation.

Lastly, the Technical Committee’s report, delivered by Secretary Simon Ayuba, focused on logistical details including the production of medals, meal tickets, committee tags, and numbering tags for athletes. The MOC agreed on the necessity of these items to ensure smooth operations during the event.

The meeting concluded with the appointment of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jauro Usman as the Camp Commandant, assisted by Mr. Ibrahim Isyaku from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, and Mr. Ketos Jerry Turawa from GOSTEC.

The championship’s opening ceremony has been slated for 29th September 2024, with preparations continuing in the coming weeks as additional sub-committee reports are expected.
