The outspoken gaffer, who first made waves some years back with Lobi Stars of Makurdi, opined that the NPFL has been quite impressive thus far this season.
Although Uwua admitted he is no longer fully involved in NPFL action, the no-nonsense gaffer, who also previuosly coached Enyimba of Aba, Niger Tornadoes of Minna and Bendel Insurance of Benin City, said he still keenly follows matches.
Sports247.ng reports further that Uwua cited instances of teams winning or drawing matches away from home and the current tight standings on top of the table to buttress his view about a much improved domestic league.
Uwua added, “I am not fully involved for now, but I am following all activities of the league.
“I am very impressed, and I think the standard is so encouraging.
“I know for sure, if they continue this way, the league will be better.”
Uwua continued with a hint that an improved league would ultimately translate into better representation for Nigeria in continental competitions.
He expatiated, saying: “The clubs that qualify to represent Nigeria will do better than what we used to see.
“That’s because the qualification process is now better, not the crooked way it used to be.
“When someone wins the league truly, they will also do well when competing outside Nigeria.
“That’s why I am quite impressed with how the league is going now.”
The flamboyant tactician then explained various factors that made him conclude that the NPFL is now better than what it used to be, especially in the ongoing season.
“Now we see teams losing or drawing at home. We see teams winning away matches or drawing away.
“That is a good omen; but it’s too early to talk about who will win the league this season. The gap is too close.
“Any team that loses one match or draws will fall. That’s why we saw Remo Stars go down to second position because they lost last weekend.
“For me, I would wish that Lobi Stars would win the league. Why not? Anything can still happen.
“The gap is not much, and any team can still close up with two or three matches. That’s to show the improvement in the league this season,” he concluded theoretically.
Uwua, who was in 2021 appointed as a special assistant to Governor Ortom in Benue State, took another look at all matchday 13 results this past weekend and, with six rounds to go, he predicted that the title race will be close till the last kick of the season.
