Day one of the football event of the maiden Oyo SWAN/Jerona U-13 Sports Fiesta witnessed a harvest of goals as a total of 27 goals were pumped into the nets of the opposing teams.
Four of the eight teams which battled each other at the quarter final games played at the football pitch of Ikolaba High School in Ibadan, triumphed over the opponents and subsequently qualified for semi final stage of the competition.
In the first game of the day, Brightville College pummelled their opponents, Kiddies Excel College by 12 goals to one, with Adem Secondary School similarly walloping Bodija International College by five goals.
Another team which was comprehensively beaten, Fontanna International High School fell to Generationext by four goals to one.
In a post match interview, the Proprietress of Fontanna College Dr Benedicta Okeke praised her team despite their defeat. She said her boys were inexperienced but gave a good account of themselves.
“We have never participated in any inter school football competition. This is the first time my students will feature in a competition as this. Therefore, I commend them for exhibiting their skills despite playing against a better and more experienced team”, Dr Okeke said.
However, unlike the trio of Brightville College, Adem Secondary School and Generationext which cruised into the semifinal of the competition, Precious endured a hard fought battle with Notable Naija Sports before they won by 4-2 in the ensuing penalty shoot out used to decide the winners after the two teams settled for a 2-2 draw at regulation time.
The competition continues today at the same venue as the four semifinalists will slug it out with each other to determine which of the teams qualify for the final of the football contest.
Brightville College will confront Generationext in the first semifinal game at 12 midday while Precious Academy will square up against Adem Secondary School in the second game which will kick off at 2pm.
The final of the football competition will be held alongside the athletics final at a yet to be announced date at the Lekan Salami stadium in Ibadan .
