Former Super Falcons player, Gift Okunwa Igunbor, has urged coach Randy Waldrum to prioritize securing a ticket to the Paris Olympics over disciplinary actions towards key players.
In light of Nigeria’s recent first-leg victory against South Africa in the final round of the Olympic Games qualifiers, Igunbor believes that effective utilization of star player Asisat Oshoala could have led to a more favorable outcome.
Igunbor emphasized the critical importance of leveraging the team’s strongest assets, particularly in high-stakes competitions like the Olympics.
Despite Oshoala’s late arrival, Igunbor stressed that the ultimate goal of Olympic qualification should take precedence over individual disciplinary measures.
“It’s very bad. Despite that the girl came late, you know that this tournament that we are going for, the Olympics, is very very at stake.”Igunbor remarked.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s performance in the qualifiers, Igunbor expressed concern about missed opportunities and the potential impact on the team’s chances of securing a spot in the Paris Olympics.
She emphasized the need for strategic decision-making and maximizing the team’s potential to achieve success on the international stage.
As the Super Falcons continue their quest for Olympic qualification, Igunbor’s insights serve as a reminder of the significance of effective team management and player utilization.
With the Paris Olympics on the horizon, Nigeria’s coaching staff faces the challenge of balancing disciplinary actions with the imperative of securing victories to clinch a coveted spot in the prestigious tournament.
