Gernot Rohr has said Nigeria could have scored more in Sunday’s 2022 World Cup qualifiers 2-0 win over the Central African Republic in Doula.
First-half goals from Leon Balogun and Victor Osimhen ensured the Super Eagles got the better of the Central African Republic following last Thursday’s shock 1-0 loss at home to the Wild Beasts.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Rohr highlighted the impact of Ahmed Musa’s leadership in the team and said a change of system was key to the victory.
“It was a good reaction from my team. We lost the other day, very unlucky at the last minute so everybody wanted to take revenge. They did it very well even we could have scored a third or fourth goal.
“We changed the system, we played with three at the back. And I think this helped us also and with the leadership of Musa to win this game. It is not easy to beat this Central African Republic. We saw it, they made a lot of fouls. A lot. But fortunately, we don’t have any big injuries and now we can prepare for the next games in November and I hope everything will be fine. At the end of the day.”
With two rounds of matches left, Nigeria remains top of Group C on 9 points, two above Cape Verde who are in the second position. CAR are third on 4 points while Lone Stars of Liberia occupies the fourth position on 3 points.
Rohr also had a message for Nigerians, thanking fans for their continued support.
“Nobody was in the stadium but I think our fans were watching the match on TV. Thank you for your support all the time. The team is trying in what they do, they are fighting. We have a young team, they can make some mistakes. It happened the other day but they never give up.”
