The Franco-German, Gernot Rohr was relieved of his duties as the handler of the Nigerian national team on Sunday, but he looks back with a sense of pride.
Gernot Rohr has expressed his mixed feelings about his time with the Nigerian national team following his dismissal on Sunday.
The 68-year old manager was in charge of the Super Eagles for five years and four months. Rohr faced a lot of criticism for his perceived failure to get the best out of the talents at his disposal and poor results during his last months at the helm.
Looking back on his time with the three-time African champions, Rohr revealed his pride to have achieved what he did with the team.
“I don’t think anyone could have stayed there as long as I did,” Rohr told Rheinpfalz.
“It wasn’t always easy, but it was extremely interesting.
“We have built a young team that can win the Cup. It was wonderful with them (the team and the staff). But there were problems with the others.
“I am still proud that we have achieved everything we set out to do.”
While at the helm, the former Bordeaux manager led Nigeria to the group stages of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and secured a third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. His record stands at 35 wins, 16 draws, and 13 defeats in 64 matches.
