Former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has named the trio of Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze among the best players he has ever managed.
Rohr spent six years as head coach of Nigeria between August 2016 to December 2021. In his 31-year managerial career, the German has previously led French clubs Bordeaux and Nice, as well as the national teams of Gabon and Burkina Faso among other jobs.
In an interview with German publication Bild, the 69-year-old was asked to list the best players he has ever managed. The Gabonese attacker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was chosen, along with three other players he managed while serving as Nigeria’s head coach.
“In addition to Aubameyang and Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi is also a wonderful footballer. And Villarreal’s Nigerian Samuel Chukwueze, who shot Bayern out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals, is going to be a big one,” Rohr said, going on to praise Chukwueze, saying the winger is capable of anything.
“Chukwueze is a great dribbler with a lot of wit and stands for attractive wing play. If Samuel comes in from the right and pulls in, he’s capable of anything.”
Rohr also remarked that Osimhen has the potential to be a world-class player if he works on specific aspects of his game. He explained:
“If he develops further, he can become a world class player. Victor still needs to improve a few things, like working on his body language. If something doesn’t work, he shows it too much on the pitch. But these are small things, he can handle them.”
