Super Eagles assistant coach, George Finidi, is harboring high hopes for Nigeria’s performance at the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

Finidi’s optimism stems from the team’s recent convincing victory over Sao Tome and Principe, sending a clear signal to potential opponents in the competition.
Since winning the AFCON title in South Africa in 2013 under the late coach Stephen Keshi, Nigeria’s performance in subsequent editions has been less impressive. The team failed to qualify for the 2017 edition and secured a bronze medal in the 2019 AFCON in Egypt under coach Gernot Rohr.
The most recent edition in Cameroon saw the Super Eagles exit in the round of 16, marking their worst performance in recent history.
However, with Nigeria having secured its ticket to the 2024 edition, Finidi is feeling optimistic about their chances. He acknowledges that every team aims to win the AFCON, but emphasizes the importance of a strong start in the tournament.
“Every country wants to win the AFCON even before the competition begins, but when you get there, it all depends on how you start the tournament,” Finidi stated.

He believes that starting the tournament well and building confidence can lead the Super Eagles to success, setting their sights on winning the competition.
Finidi brings experience from his time as a player, having been part of the 1994 Super Eagles squad that won the African title in Tunisia and the Dream Team that clinched Olympics Gold in Atlanta ’96.
As Nigeria prepares for the 2024 AFCON, Finidi’s optimism and focus on a strong start indicate the team’s determination to make a significant impact in Ivory Coast and potentially secure a medal in the tournament.
