Gateway United Mourns Passing Of Former Coach Phillip Boamah

Nigerian Football Community Grieves the Loss of a Coaching Icon with Deep Ties to Gateway United

Gateway United, along with the entire Nigerian football community, is in mourning following the passing of the esteemed former coach, Phillip Boamah, who breathed his last in the early hours of Thursday at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

Niyi Soleye, the acting General Manager of Gateway United, expressed profound sorrow in a heartfelt condolence message, acknowledging Coach Phillip Boamah’s substantial contributions to the club’s rich legacy.

“The entire Gateway United family mourns the untimely loss of our esteemed former coach, Phillip Boamah. His legacy and impact on our club are immeasurable. Soleye extended sympathies to Boamah’s family and friends, emphasizing the indelible mark he left on the football fraternity.

“Our hearts are heavy as we bid farewell to Coach Phillip Boamah, a revered figure in the history of Gateway United. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends during this challenging time.”

Philip Boamah served as the coach of Gateway United from 2011 to 2013 and later returned to the club in 2014, assuming the role of a technical consultant.

His coaching journey extended beyond Gateway United, encompassing managerial roles at Leventis United, Ranchers Bees, Dolphins United, Kwara United, and Kwara Stars. Boamah also managed Shooting Stars twice before his retirement.

The late Ghanaian-born player was not only a distinguished coach but also a significant figure in Nigerian football history.

Boamah was part of the victorious IICC (now Shooting Stars) squad of 1976 that secured the first continental title ever won by any Nigerian club side. Additionally, he was a member of the Green Eagles in 1970.
