Ganiyu Gberefun’s Last-Minute Strike Secures Dramatic Win For Osun United Over Madiba FC

Osun United clinched a thrilling 1-0 victory over Madiba FC in a crucial week five Nigeria National League (NNL) clash at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.

The decisive moment came in stoppage time as Ganiyu Gberefun scored the match-winning goal.

Head coach Seye Ajayi made a few changes to the lineup that defeated Abakaliki FC, bringing in Odeyemi Ebenezer, Samuel Udor, and Akeem Olalere.

The first half was a tight contest with limited chances, but goalkeeper Biola Sabitu’s excellent saves ensured the “Imole Gladiators” remained level at halftime.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Sabitu once again came to Osun United’s rescue, denying a dangerous set piece just outside the box. In the final 20 minutes, the introduction of substitutes Ganiyu Gberefun, Samuel Adeniyi, and Sikiru Durodoye rejuvenated the team, causing significant problems for Madiba FC’s defense.

Osun United thought they had taken the lead earlier when Gberefun slotted into an empty net after Samuel Adeniyi bypassed the goalkeeper.

However, the goal was disallowed for offside. Despite missing other clear-cut chances, the team continued to press.

In the sixth minute of added time, Gberefun finally found the back of the net, converting a pinpoint assist from Sikiru Durodoye to notch his fourth goal of the season.

The late strike sparked jubilant celebrations among players and fans. However, the match ended on a tense note as Ganiyu Mutiu received a red card for retaliation following a rough challenge.

Osun United have now accumulated 10 points from five games, losing only once. Head coach Seye Ajayi praised the team’s resilience, stating, “We came here to win, and we are grateful for the victory.

The turning point was recognizing the fatigue in our opponents and introducing fresh strikers, which paid off. Kudos to the team and everyone involved.”

The “Believe and Achieve” squad will host ABS FC, also known as the Saraki Boys, in another critical Match Day 6 encounter next weekend.
