Six female coaches including head coach of Nigeria Premier league men’s team Plateau Peaks Jacqueline Niagwan, Lina Dang, Uduak Nanbam Ninmo, Ruth Okafor, Simi John Akuusu, and Nendirmwa Joshua Fwenji were amongst the 35 coaches who beneficiaries of the free Giants of Africa coaches capacity building workshop and clinic held at the Niger Creek, Jos, Plateau state Nigeria.
The workshop facilitated by Giants of Africa Northern and Western Africa coordinator, Michael Akuboh took the coaches on elite and developmental topics such as Principles and Ethics of Coaching, Game Management, and Statistics: How coaches use statistics to train and evaluate player efficiency.
Beyond the coaches’ development program, Giants of Africa facilitated a basketball clinic for 30 school children and youth players at the Rantya High school, as part of the 2-day basketball development program in the north central state of Nigeria.
According to the program coordinator, Michael Akuboh the GOA coaches’ capacity building workshop will continue to move round various states in Nigeria and across countries in the West African region.
“So far we have had two coaches workshop this year, in Monrovia, Republic of Liberia and now Jos, Nigeria. Cities like Accra, Ghana; Jalingo, Taraba State and Abuja, Nigeria have hosted the coaches’ capacity building program in the past.”
“The goal is to reach as many basketball coaches as possible within my jurisdiction in order to elevate the game of basketball through teaching proper coaching techniques and ethics”.
So far a total of 88 coaches across two countries have been impacted by the Giants of Africa coaches’ capacity building workshop in just the first 2 quarter of 2022. The proposed next stop for the program in May 2022 is Lagos.
The Giants of Africa coaches’ capacity building program and basketball clinic in Jos was supported by the Plateau State Basketball Veterans Association.
