The name Olasubomi Ogundele, rings a huge bell in female football in Nigeria, particularly after the 26th edition of the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) held at the University of Lagos earlier this year as well as the Neymar Jr 5-Aside finals in Qatar.
Olasubomi led the Unilag Angels to the National title as the best female football side in Nigerian Universities after scoring multiple goals off the run of play and particularly from free kicks to finish as the competition’s top scorer with 10 goals as well as the Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Sharing her story with Sports247, Olasubomi described how she was spotted playing football on the street by coach Amacos, who took the courage to convince her dad to support her after which she played for Ijamido Queens, he first female football club under Coach Mike aka Agba.
“I started from the playing in the street. I was discovered while playing set by my first coach, he decided to go meet my dad (He’s of blessed memories, may his soul continue to rest in perfect peace). Getting to my house he wasn’t welcome cos my dad wasn’t in support of the idea of me playing soccer with boys. After much persuading he finally agreed and that’s how I kickstart,” Olasubomi told Sports247.
Playing as an attacking midfielder, the 200L Educational Management student at the University of Lagos asserts that combining education and sports was about finding an equilibrium even as well as looking up to Super Falcons star, Asisat Oshoala for her support to female kids.
“I must say it hasn’t been quite easy but I learnt to create an equilibrium to make both work hand in hand.”
“Role model? Ummm I really don’t have one cos I’m my role model but I look up to quite a number of athletes. I respect Asisat Oshaola for the great job she is doing for the younger lads especially school kids combining school with sport,” Olasubomi stated.
She also stated her dream of being one of the best in the world and playing at the highest level in the next five years as she currently plays with Alimosho FC Ladies, which she represented at the Neymar Jr 5-Aside finals in Qatar this year after emerging Nigerian champions and scoring three times against the Netherlands.
