Former Flying Eagles captain and ex-Super Eagles international Sylvanus Okpala has stressed that friendly matches are vital in preparing the team for the upcoming CAF U-20 AFCON.
Speaking on the importance of these games, Okpala explained, “The important thing is that it’s a team-up match. It’s a good match for them. And the Ivory Coast is one of the biggest African football nations. So winning them is not important.

The important thing is how they felt during the game. That is what the coach would be mindful of—what he was teaching them, how they felt about the game, and whether they are improving, win or lose.”
Okpala emphasized that the real value of these friendlies lies in gauging tactical effectiveness and identifying individual and collective strengths and weaknesses. “We need to understand our tactical approach and strategy. From the boys, their weaknesses, their strong points both individually and collectively—because that’s very important for forging ahead,” he said.
He further suggested that playing two or three additional games before the championship would greatly benefit the team’s development and readiness.
Okpala’s remarks points at a strategic shift away from a sole focus on winning towards a broader objective of continuous improvement and learning—a philosophy that he believes is essential for the team to excel on the international stage.
