Four Super Falcons players have been named to the preliminary list of thirty women for the CAF Women’s Player of the Year award.
The four Nigerian players that made the list, which was revealed by CAF on Wednesday, are Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, Chiamaka Nnadozie, and Uchenna Kanu.
South Africa’s Banyana Banyana had the most nominees, with six. Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon, like Nigeria, has four players shortlisted, while Morocco and Ghana each have three.
Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, and Botswana each have two candidates, while Burundi and Togo each have one.
Oshoala is tied for the most African Women’s Footballer of the Year awards with Falcons’ legend Perpetua Nkwocha. Both have received the award four times. At the ceremony later this month, Oshoala will be aiming for a record-breaking fifth prize.
The Barcelona Femení has been ruled out of the rest of the 2022 WAFCON after suffering what appears to be a Medial Collateral Ligament injury in Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to South Africa on Monday.
Nigerian youngster Gift Monday was also recognized as one of the best young female players on the continent. In addition to the Women’s Young Player of the Year nomination, the Robo Queens striker made the Women’s Interclub Player of the Year list.
