Christian Chukwu, the former coach of the Super Eagles, has issued a rallying call to both players and officials of the Nigerian national football team, emphasizing the importance of preparing to face ‘bigger’ teams in the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers set to commence in November.

Speaking to the press following the Super Eagles’ resounding 6-0 victory over Sao Tome and Principe in the final group match of the 2024 AFCON qualifiers held in Uyo, Chukwu stressed the need for the team to elevate their performance standards as they gear up for the crucial World Cup qualifiers.
Chukwu encouraged the players to view their impressive win over Sao Tome and Principe as a motivating factor to intensify their efforts in preparation for the upcoming challenges.
He remarked, “I feel Super Eagles players and coaches should focus more on beating ‘bigger’ footballing nations. The World Cup qualifier will kick off in November, and Nigeria will be facing countries like South Africa, Benin Republic, Lesotho, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe.”
While acknowledging South Africa as a formidable opponent in the group, Chukwu emphasized that the other nations should not be underestimated. He emphasized the need for the Super Eagles to raise the standard of their game to secure a World Cup ticket.
Furthermore, Chukwu, who previously coached Kenya’s Harambee Stars, urged Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro to provide more opportunities for domestic players to showcase their talents in the senior national team.
Despite celebrating the victory against Sao Tome and Principe, Chukwu expressed his desire to see a greater inclusion of homegrown talent in the squad.
