The news was broken by Chief Dr. Olusegun Odegbami, a former teammate and close friend of the deceased. In an emotional statement, Odegbami shared: “I just received the news that between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, MFR, my bosom friend and teammate, one of the greatest football players in Nigeria’s history, former captain and coach of Nigeria’s national football team, has passed on.

Babuje, Emmanuel Okala, MON, gave me the sad news a few minutes ago. May ‘Onyim’ find peace with our Creator in Heaven, and may his family be consoled.”

As the former captain of Enugu Rangers, Christian Chukwu held a legendary status in Nigerian football.

He led the Green Eagles to their historic first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory in 1980. Later, he served as head coach of the Super Eagles, further cementing his legacy as one of the most influential figures in Nigerian football history.

Chukwu was widely admired for his leadership on and off the pitch, earning him the affectionate nickname “Chairman.”

His passing marks the end of an era, and he will be remembered as a true icon of Nigerian sports.
