Adesanya Emmanuel, former Chief Operating Officer of the Nigeria National League (NNL), has lauded the prompt response of the appropriate authorities in addressing the officiating controversy that marred the match between Jigawa Golden Stars and Sporting Supreme last weekend.
“I think that they should be cut off so they do not stain the whole body.
I think NFF/NRA and in conjunction with the NNL are making the right decision because we must make it at the board if somebody offends, and it’s so obvious that this thing is uncalled for.
It is not good at all bringing the game to disrepute.”
Emmanuel’s remarks underscore the importance of maintaining integrity and upholding standards in football officiating.
He applauds the decisive action taken by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Nigeria Referees Association (NRA), and NNL to address the issue swiftly and decisively.
“So derobing the match official involved is a signal to other people that they must be up and doing.
This thing we call it a hobby. It’s no longer a hobby, it’s a profession.
That thing was turned to volleyball. I was shocked it has never happened before.”
Emmanuel’s characterization of the incident as a “show of shame” emphasizes the severity of the situation and the need for accountability within the refereeing community.
He expresses disbelief at the egregious nature of the decision made by referee Zaharaudeen Nasiru, who awarded a goal despite clear handball infringement.
The swift expulsion of the referee from officiating duties demonstrates a firm stance against misconduct and reinforces the message that such behaviour will not be tolerated within Nigerian football.
Emmanuel’s commendation of the authorities reflects a collective commitment to maintaining the integrity and credibility of the sport, ensuring fair play and respect for the rules.
As Nigerian football continues to strive for excellence, the actions taken in response to this incident serve as a reminder of the importance of ethical conduct and accountability at all levels of the game.
