FC Barcelona and Ronald Koeman have earlier reached an agreement for the Dutchman to take over as the first-team coach until 30 June 2022. Koeman, 57, moves from his role as manager of the Netherlands national team on a two-year contract with Barcelona until 2022. The Dutchman replaces Quique Setien, who was sacked last Monday after he presided over the club’s worst defeat ever in European competition.
Former super eagles winger and Olympic gold medalist, Emmanuel Amunike has given his approval to the appointment of the former Barcelona man as head coach of the Catalan giants. In an interview with sports247, he recalls how fantastic the former Belgian coach is as an assistant and a backroom staff.
‘Koeman, he has a lot of experience when it comes to coaching. He has played in the institution. He is a former Barcelona player. He contributed a lot to the club. He was in Barcelona as an assistant coach during my time.’
It could be recalled that Barcelona suffered a humiliating 8-2 defeat to German Giants Bayern Munich in the champions league and Barcelona hope to rebuild the team for the forthcoming season. ‘With the situation, Barcelona are right now, someone has to assume responsibility and do the best to see if Barcelona can come back to the normal track they have set in the past.
‘I wish him all the best. Coaching a team like this requires a lot of discipline, commitment, and vision. We hope he can turn things around for Barcelona.’
