Football won’t thrive until government hands off – Yarmaight FC boss

The future and development of the Nigeria football League lies away from the reliance on government. This is according Nigeria Football Federation Reforms Committee member and owner of Nigeria National League side Yarmalight Football Club, Farouq Yarma.

Speaking with Sports247.ng at the inauguration of the Committee yesterday, Yarma insists that club owners and administrators must begin to think outside the box as well as emulate other thriving professional leagues on the continent to actualize the goal of a vibrant football league in Nigeria.

Football in the country especially at the club levels have severally experienced setbacks especially when playing on the continent and the football enthusiast has suggested that for the sport to develop, a drastic step has to be taken to divest government’s involvement in the running of football teams in the country.

Several individuals have taken the initiative of investing in football in the country with few clubs already in the Nigerian League being owned by individuals such as Kunle Solaja of Remo Stars, Patric Ifeanyi Ubah, proprietor of FC Ifeanyi Ubah among others.

Yarma insists that for there to be true development in sports in the country especially football the government at all levels and the Football Federation must come up with a working formula on how to properly take football back to the private sector.
