The craze for football in the Ajegunle area of Lagos is set to reach another level, as action holds at the area’s Naval Barracks till the end of this year and into early 2022.
While other communities across Lagos State and Nigeria at large have put football aside for now until after yuletide celebrations, Ajegunle is still buzzing with soccer action.
Such it is that Ajegunle Football Coaches Association have finalized plans to stage an eight-team competition that will run from December 28 to January 8th at the Naval Ground near Boundary Market.
The competition, which will be staged in honor of late Mrs. Josephine Iyanise Ampey, also has support from Godbless Eddy Egbe, Friends In Diaspora, and England-based former footballer, Kelly Osegbe.
In providing details of the impending competition, Osegbe revealed that it is dedicated to the memory of the wife of a major sponsor of youth football in the area, Pastor Ampey.
He added that the eight competing teams, which were specially selected on their track records in the community, will play a chain of knock-out matches on December 28, 29, and 30, with the final scheduled for January 8th.
The teams are AJ Lischester, All Saint FC, Christ Ambassador Sports Academy (CASA), Danjuma FC, Further Talent FC, Indomitable Sports Club, Team Godbless Egbe, and Young Talented FC.
Osegbe, who runs a talent hunt and entertainment company in England, enthused: “This is another effort to ensure that the football culture of Ajegunle continues.
“We are now mixing football with showbusiness, to signify that festivities or social occasions should not stop sports, but they can go along together if well planned.”
