FOC commends participants for discipline, sportsmanship

Rear Adm. David Adeniran, Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Eastern Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy, has commended officers who participated at the Intra-Command Sports Competition for their sense of discipline and sportsmanship.

Adeniran, who spoke in Calabar at the end of the one-week sports competition, said that the competition was one of the series of events earmarked for 2019 end of year activities in the command.

“The fact that we converged to witness sports competition speaks volume on the readiness of the service to enhance the fitness of personnel to undertake normal operations and activities.

“The discipline and sportsmanship displayed by officers throughout the period of the games were highly commendable.

“The command decided to introduce the Games Torch Relay. The torch was ignited on Oct. 30, 2019, at the headquarters of Eastern Naval Command.

“It started from the FOC and will end at the flame/torch stand. The torch went through units and commands by land and sea.

“This shows teamwork; one torch, one command, one unit; consisting of several parts chained together. Remember, we are one unit, that is our goal,” he said.

The FOC said that the objectives of the games prescribed at the beginning have been met, adding that new talents were discovered while some new records were also set.

He charged the Local Organising Committee to continue preparing selected athletes for the next Nigerian Navy games.

The Special Guest of Honour at the event, Air Vice Marshal Eko Osim (rtd), commended the participants for fair play and sportsmanship.

Osim lauded the civil-military relationship exhibited by the Command, adding that the Navy had contributed greatly to peace of the country.

Team Portharcourt won the football competition and tug of war, while team Calabar won the men’s volleyball and the mixed relay.
